I am an advanced-beginner Ukulele player. I know a few different strums, a load of chords, can competently strum most songs, and I can pick (not perfect - but I am learning). There are plenty of books out there for beginners and there is a lot of very advanced stuff but not a lot to help players learn to bridge the gap between beginner and expert. With a lot of books that say they are for more advanced players I often start off ok but later get stuck. This book breaks up concepts into small easy to digest daily pieces. The book walks you through and though it starts with super easy "work outs" I do them as there is always something to learn. I am just starting out with this book (past two weeks) but already I highly recommend it. I play every day and I use the exercises in this book to warm up.UPDATE: I am on week 10. I would be a liar if I told you it would be easy; some of the exercises are tricky to get right (Be sure to listen to the CD). BUT so far so good. I am actually noticing an improvement in my playing!

I'm a professional pianist and have been practicing the craft my whole life. I picked up the uke a couple of months ago because I wanted to learn an instrument which was portable and could play both chords and melody. I tried the guitar but found the learning curve with 6 strings too much. The uke is a perfect alternative for me. I looked through several method/beginning books which got me started but most were so simplistic they put me off. The beauty of this book is that he starts you off with interesting chords, scales and riffs. Having learned a great many chords already, I am ready for the challenges presented here. Kudos to the author for not producing just another "basic" book. I'm going to leave my innate desire to move ahead and just do the daily work of mastering each lesson.Pedantic note to non-musicians: learning any instrument means putting in the time. Go SLOWLY! If you can't play an exercise SLOWLY you can't hope to ever play it smoothly at a faster tempo. Slow study builds the muscle memory. Period. Learning almost anything--think of learning a foreign language--is all about repetition: endless repetition. There is nothing natural to your fingers and hands in playing the uke (or the piano). Your body needs time to adjust to awkward new demands. End of lecture. Enjoy your uke! You'll enjoy it even more if you buy and use this book. Thanks, Jake!

Who this book is NOT for: Beginners. The only reason this book got a one-star rating from someone is that it is marketed as an 'ALL LEVELS' book, which I consider false advertising (which is why I see it as a four star book). I can say this with some confidence because I've taught hundreds of beginning students to play the ukulele and this book would leave most of them in the dust, discouraged and disheartened. Also, this book is NOT for people who prefer to learn the ukulele organically . . . by which I mean 'one song at a time' (the book includes drills for skills in seven categories, there are no songs in this book). Despite these drawbacks . . . this is an awesome book.Who this book IS for: players with a firm grasp of the basics, that have a good number of chords already under their belt, have good practicing skills, aren't afraid of standard staff notation and are glad to see it side by side with tablature. If this is you, you're going to get a lot out of this book.That said, I consider myself an intermediate player with a lot of musical knowledge that translates over from other instruments I've learned to play. Even with that kind of background, there's some pretty tough stuff in this book that you're going to have to be patient with . . .The toughest part may be the advanced/tricky chord shapes that are thrown out pretty early in the book (I have a hard time understanding the rhyme/reason for the order in which chords are introduced). But, if you're like me, you'll enjoy stretching yourself a bit to make your fingers fit these shapes.I like what one of the other reviewers said about using each week as a daily round of seven drills. I think people will get a lot more out of the book practicing this way as some of the drills are not going to be mastered in a day.WHAT I LOVE: There's stuff in this book I haven't seen anywhere else, and I've bought about twenty instructional ukulele books in my quest to be a better teacher. Also, as a singer/songwriter, it is so nice to be able to pick up new techniques, fingerpicking, strumming, chords, riffs to inspire my own writing.

Not five stars because...issues I encountered:- my Kindle version on Microsoft Surface Pro 3 under Windows 10 cannot play the audio filesFor each musical example there is a dark bar above it that says "There is audio content at this location that is not currently supported for your device. The caption for"That's the enitre, literal quote.- Below that it says "Tap Music To enlarge" but when I tap it it DOES NOT enlarge. Instead it jumps to another page.So, because of my old man eye sight I have to use a magnifier sometimes to read the examples.- The book publisher, Hal Leonard, was essentially useless in remedying any issue. Thankfully I was able to contact the author, Chad Johnson, and he sent me a zip file with all the audio examples.There are 40 mp3's, each corresponding to one of the 40 weeks of the book. Each mp3 contains all 14 examples for a given week, played one after the other.The book consists of 40 chapters for 40 weeks. Each chapter / week has a lesson for each day of the week. Each day has 2 musical examples so 2 examples x 7 days of the week equals 14 examples per mp3. I think each example is played twice but be prepared to hit the Pause on whatever mp3 player you are using.

The "Oscars" of the Comic Industry are called The Eisner Awards, and named after Will Eisner. The Eisners are presented annually before a packed ballroom at Comic-Con International in San Diego, America's largest comics convention.

Wizard magazine named Eisner "the most influential comic artist of all time." Michael Chabon's Pulitzer-prize winning novel The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay is based in good part on Eisner. In 2002, Eisner received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Federation for Jewish Culture, only the second such honor in the organization's history, presented by Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Art Spiegelman.

I really, really enjoyed this book. I had no idea I could enjoy reading about physicists and their various personalities and accomplishments. Make no mistake this book is all about Richard Feynman, but Gleick did it in such as way as to make it a mini-history of the development of the field in physics and a mini-who's who of physics during Feynman reign as one of the best of the best. The time line is ever changing, starting at the beginning of his life and forward, then circling back to pick up tidbits from time to time. I swear Gleick's occasional use of formulas and graphs was so skilled I even thought I understood the basics of physics -- not so, but it felt like I could. It's a long book, 500+ pages, and I was never bored. I think I like knowing "about" Feynman. According to Gleick, Feynman's philosophy of life was preferring to "not know the answers" and be looking for them. He wasn't frightened with "not knowing". His words as he lay dying, according to Gleick, will stay with me forever: "I'd hate to die twice. It's so boring."I wondered how Gleick was able to bring so much personal detail into this biography. Then I read his bibliography. Amazing!

After reading Chaos, also by James Gleick, I was curious whether Genius was better written than what I thought of Chaos. Sadly it wasn't.Like in Chaos, I didn't like the way Gleick writes. It's simply too unfocused on the main topic. In Chaos, it seemed more like a collection of stories and biographies and in Genius, it seems like Gleick wasn't interested at all in Feynmann. The book starts off with the events straight after the conclusion of the Manhattan project in which Feynmann contributed. And then moving to Feynmann himself in a chronological order of his life.Throughout the book a few themes are touched upon. How Feynmann is always in the search of mental shortcuts, especially in calculation (this was a time before calculators!), how Feynmann has a more physical intuition towards physics rather than his sometimes more mathematically-driven colleagues, how Feynmann was a genius who doesn't accept the solutions of others but have to work through the problems himself and how he left a lot of groundbreaking works behind because he wasn't interested enough in trying to publish it.Other themes that are less mentioned but still prominent enough are the his love to his first wife Arline and her early death and how that continued to some degree to affect him throughout this life, rivalries and adoration of other scientists and the influence of his father on his special way of thinking.At first glance the book is very thorough but it quickly becomes clear that Gleick perhaps tries to do too much. In his coverage of Feynmann, he really gets into the thinking, the way of working of Feynmann, and his life. Until you realize that it's an external look into his achievements and very little on the person himself. Arline, his first love, must have played a major influence in his life, but Gleick doesn't drill into their relationship enough and try to infer how that could have influenced Feynmann.Gleick doesn't give Feynmann a personality other than that of a man who is searching for the ultimate truth and wanted to see the laws of the universe. Gleick mentions Feynmann being accused of sexism, then uses one recommendation that Feynmann did for a woman, and then excusing it with the fact that at that time it was a boy's club. Sure, Feynmann was probably more intelligent than most people, but even amongst peers? Gleick takes all of the older generation (Dirac, Bohr, Heisenberg and even Einstein) and depicts them as dinosaurs who did well, but not as well as Feynmann who found even more fundamental truths about the universe. Which is a bit strange, because a scientist should be judged on the time that they lived in and not what came after. Feynmann did after all build on top of the discoveries made by this older generation which Gleick likes to compare to Feynmann. Gleick then tries to make every one of Feynmann's contemporaries either a fan (like Dyson) or a rival who disliked Feynmann because he was smarter than them (Schwinger, Gell-Mann). Which is strange since many of these contemporaries also won Nobel Prizes and did significant work that sometimes was the same as Feynmann's even if Feynmann's work won out in the end because of widespread adoption.Lastly Gleick spends a lot of time trying to explain some of the groundbreaking discoveries but it quickly fails for me since he never explained any of the basics needed to understand this.I would not recommend this biography. Gleick doesn't look into Feynmann as a person but seems content to spend half of the biography discussing physics and the other half on Feynmann's achievements. An unbalanced biography which seems to build into the cult of Feynmann (even the title doesn't really shy away from this). I've read that "Surely you're joking Mr Feynmann" which is written by Feynmann himself as a collection of anecdotes is a worthwhile read. And compared to this book, you might as well read a biased account about Feynmann written by Feynmann himself.

I really wanted to like this book. I have liked other books by the author, and after reading "Surely You're Joking Mr. Feynman!" I consider Richard Feynman a personal hero.But ultimately I don't feel that this book did him justice, at least to my eyes as a non-physicist lay reader.This quote, about Feynman, appears near the end of the book: "They knew they had a remarkable central figure, a scientist who prided himself not on his achievements in science—these remained deep in the background—but on his ability to see through fraud and pretense and to master everyday life."Yes. This is the Feynman I want to read about. Not about his scientific achievements in all their technical detail, but about his method and approach to science and life. Unfortunately, though, the book is bogged down in long sections of technical abstraction. No doubt these sections are interesting to physicists or physics graduate students, but I'm not one of them.Perhaps this is a great book that simply did not meet my unrealistic expectations for it. But for me, I'd recommend "Surely You're Joking" absolutely without reservation, but this book only to technical readers. "Surely You're Joking" is a book about an interesting character where you learn a bit of science along the way. "Genius" is a book about science where you learn about an interesting man along the way.
